Young Farmers Club
he Young Farmers Club offers an excellent opportunity for children aged 8-13 to explore in an interactive hands-on way themes of animal care, food growing, environmental conservation, healthy cooking and rural crafts.
Sessions are child-led, creating a space for young people to work alone or in a group in developing their problem solving skills, social development and communication skills. Children are encouraged to immerse themselves in outdoor experiences: in growing their own food and learning to cook with it, gaining bushcraft and survival skills, understanding how to care for the Farm animals and protecting the local environment and wildlife.
Club members are encouraged to share their ideas, listen to others and respond to problems in a collaborative and imaginative way.
Children’s newly acquired skills and knowledge are rewarded with AQA unit certificates for them to take home. Once Young Farmers reach 14 they are offered the chance of becoming livestock volunteers at the Farm.
“I am constantly astounded by the amount of information my children have learnt and eagerly both pass on to us and put into practice! They point out flowers that are edible, demonstrate cooking skills they have learnt, build and light a fire, tell us facts about animals, pass on gardening tips and generally have a mind of knowledge that I can’t imagine they would learn anywhere else“
“My children are given responsibilities and tasks to carry out independently and have developed a very mature and moral understanding of all things ‘natural’”
“You have helped our family to be a much healthier and happier one… I think caring for and feeding the animals at the farm has improved my children’s self-awareness and responsibilities towards their own environment“
“The Young Farmers Club has been a great social and educational experience for our children. They have been able to actively engage with their love of animals in an inclusive, diverse and supportive group of children and leaders“
“We think the Young Farmers Club is a fantastic resource for the community and a vital and precious input for children living a very urban and inner city life“
